LAB EXERCISE:  Getting Started with PHP and MySQL

Learn how to set up your PC for Web development with WAMPSERVER, from installation to writing your first PHP program.  

WAMPSERVER (Windows/Apache/MySQL/PHP Server) is a free pre-configured distribution for setting up a windows based PC for PHP/MySQL application development.   It is the first step to take for becoming a PHP Web Developer.  

Attendees are encouraged to bring their laptops to the session and do the install along with class.  

Those who register for the session will be sent an email with instructions for preparing your laptop for the class.  You do not need to bring a laptop, detail instructions will be handed out in the class that you can use to do the install at home or in the office.

After a brief overview of WAMPSERVER and the agenda we will:

1.      Install WAMPSERVER

2.      Install NOTEPAD++ (a free program editor)

3.      Start WAMPSERVER

4.      Test the installation with PHPINFO.PHP

5.      Write, Debug and Run your first PHP Program

The Art of Debugging: From STRDBG to the RDI/WDSC Debugger

Making the decision to abandon the green screen development environment takes a lot of patience. Once you made the leap though, you’ll be very glad you did. This session examines our old comfort-zone friend STRDBG and shows the similarities, differences and productivity improvements in this new world of application debugging.

The learning objectives of this session are:

  • Grow confidence in using the RDi/WDSc debugger
  • Learn how to run, debug and control programs using the RDi/WDSc debugging environment

With an IT career spanning over 25 years, Charles Guarino has been a consultant for most of them. Since 1995 he has been President and founder of Central Park Data Systems, Inc., a Long Island based IBM midrange consulting company.

Charles has published several technical and strategic articles, served as a member of AS/400 Management Magazine’s Editorial Review Board, and has received recognition as a COMMON Speaker of Merit.

More recently, Charles was the featured speaker for COMMON’s webcast, "RPG and XML:  Using Web Services and XML documents” and iSociety’s Fireside Chat.  He was inducted into COMMON’s Speaker Excellence Hall of Fame at the 2008 Spring Conference. Charles is also a COMMON Application Development Subject Matter Expert and a member and Director of LISUG, a Long Island IBM System i Users Group
